Europe is on the eve of war. The Germans are marching on Paris. President Roosevelt ponders the unheard of thought of a third term. And Eleanor Roosevelt finds herself caught up in solving another murder. Senator Vance Gibson is murdered in the East Room while attending a formal dinner at the White House. Who dun it? In the course of the investigation, Senator Gibson is revealed to be a man of many interests-his Virginia estate, regulating the health insurance industry, and women. Many women. Eleanor is able to help authorities untangle Gibson's love life and murder while keeping up with her demanding life as the nation's First Lady. The twelfth boon the Eleanor Roosevelt series is an enjoyable romp through Washington DC politics and personalities-1940's style. Amazingly enough, the scene has not changed much in 70 years. Published posthumously, this story was fast paced and did not dwell on the character's clothing and the rooms they occupied (as I feel he did in earlier novels). Without a doubt, the book is enjoyable for it's historical setting as well as the well conceived story. Still, I always wonder what President and Mrs. Roosevelt would have to say about son Elliott's portrayal of them.--reviewed by Deb M.
