Diamond Willow is a brief verse novel, however a lot gets resolved in this short book. The book is about a 12 year old girl named Willow. Willow is a Native Alaskan who is a dog sled enthusiast and mostly a loner. Willow goes through a life changing experience as the result of a sledding accident. The novel is written partly as poems that take the shape of diamonds. Within each diamond poem there is a special message in bold. These messages help create an even deeper understanding of Willow. Frost also wrote part of the book as short narratives by the reincarnated ancestors of the characters. The ancestors who are watching over Willow and her family and friends have taken on the forms of different animals within the story. Because of this, the reader knows more than the characters ever do.
